The idea for the song began during a stay on a houseboat in Sausalito, California, near San Francisco.
Redding had been performing in the Bay Area, and while staying on the houseboat he spent time looking out across the water. He was also listening repeatedly to The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which had clearly made an impression on him.
The peaceful setting, combined with his growing interest in expanding beyond traditional soul music, helped inspire the song that would eventually become “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay.”
It was unlike anything Redding had previously written.

Redding was only 26 years old.

“(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was released in January 1968, just weeks after Redding’s death.

The song eventually reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Redding’s biggest hit and the first posthumously released single to reach the top of that chart. It also became his only song to reach No. 1 on both the pop and R&B charts.
